In the old city of Nablus, Palestine a proud tradition of soap making has existed and been embraced for millennia. With a recipe and process that has barely changed in that time.
The roots of Nablus soap can be traced back over a thousand years ago where the soap was made by women for household use. In around the 10th century, small soap factories began springing up all over Nablus and by the turn of the 14th century a thriving industry had been developed, and the soap, reputedly prized by Queen Elizabeth I, was being exported throughout the Middle East and Europe.
Soap that isn’t all-natural may contain harsh chemicals that may be harmful to the body in the long term. For example, many soap companies add chemicals to make the soap bubble more and keep it from spoiling.
The alkaline compound used to make Nablus soap is made by mixing the powdered ashes of the barilla plant that grows along the Jordan River, with locally sourced lime. The sodium compound is then heated with water and olive oil in copper vats over fermentation pits. Once the saponification process has taken place, the thick liquid is poured onto a flat surface to cool and set. Once set, it is cut into cubes and stacked into towers called tanana. The soap bars are left in these towers to cure (dry) for 3 - 12 months, a process that removes almost all of the moisture and ensures the soap lasts longer and produces a nice creamy lather.
Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, D, E and K all of which have many benefits for your skin. Nablus soap is gentle, so even the most sensitive skin will absorb the goodness of the olive oil without flaring up, and the all-natural ingredients can be used to moisturise infants’ skin, and may help alleviate skin conditions such as sunburn, eczema and psoriasis.
